IND vs AUS Test Series: Indian Cricket Overhaul – Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has backed Rahul Dravid to steer Team India to success. Dravid was appointed as head coach after great persuasion from Ganguly during his reign as BCCI president. More than a year into the job, Dravid’s tenure is not off to a flyer with exits in Asia Cup & T20 World Cup. However, Ganguly backs his former teammate to turn it around ahead of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Follow India vs Australia LIVE Updates on Insidesport.IN

“He has done very well except for the T20 World Cup. The team still went to the semifinals and was just one match away from the final. He will do well. You have to give him time, he has just had one year. It’s too short a time for a coach,” Ganguly told Sportstar.

Speaking to Sportstar, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has dismissed criticism of Rahul Dravid’s coaching. Ganguly convinced long-time teammate Dravid to take up the mantle year, and the results have been fairly disappointing. Since taking over the job, India have lost both Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup. While defeats are part and parcel of sport, the manner of those led to doubts regarding Dravid’s capability in managing superstars.

Amid the criticism, Sourav Ganguly has called for patience from the Indian Cricket fans. The former BCCI president suggested that one year is a short time for a coach. Given how Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav have upped their game, Ganguly backed his long-time teammate to get India to bigger honours.

“He will turn this team around. You can see Shubman Gill emerging as a very good batter and you will see a few others develop as well. There’s Surya (Suryakumar Yadav), who has done well in the shorter format. So, you have to give some time to Rahul. He will do well,” Ganguly told Sportstar.

Dravid’s coaching tenure coincided with a change in captaincy. Rohit Sharma took over from Virat across formats. There is another change on the cards, with Hardik Pandya set to succeed Rohit in T20s. There remain suggestions that BCCI are open to appointing a specialist shorter format coach.

India under Dravid have been home track bullies. However, Rohit Sharma’s side faces their biggest test under the Dravid regime with the Border Gavaskar Trophy. The hosts are chasing a WTC Final spot, while the World No.1 rank is also up for grabs. Dravid as head coach is yet to lose a Test match at home and will hope for the record to continue.
