The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is one of the most important series that India will play this year. Not only will India get to dominate the mighty Australians yet again, this crucial series also serves as a dress rehearsal for the upcoming WTF finals, where India is mostly like to qualify as the second team.

With just a few days remaining ahead of the Nagpur Test, Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid’s main concern would be to finalize India’s bowling lineup. At this crucial juncture, Kuldeep Yadav is all set to be sent to the bench yet again. Yadav was a part of the India squad that traveled to Bangladesh last December.

He got his chance to play in the first Test at Chattogram and put out a decent performance. He score 40 runs and picked a 5-wicket haul in the first innings and scalped another 3 wickets in the second innings, thereby becoming one of India’s most vital bowlers. But unfortunately for him, he found his name on the bench in the following Test that took place in Mirpur, Dhaka.

The same is expected to happen yet again. India’s preferred spin option would fall on the capable and competent shoulders of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel. While the selection of Ravi Ashwin in the Test team is a no-brainer, a returning Jadeja will add the dynamic strength of the team.

As for the choice for the third spinner in the team, Axar will get the nod ahead of Kuldeep. The Gujarati ace spinner is a good all-rounder, capable of hitting big shots with the bat that can come in real handy lower down the order. As for his bowling prowess, Axar is deadly in Indian turning pitches and therefore would be selected in the Playing XI.

Despite being away from the Indian team for quite some time, Kuldeep Yadav maximized his chances when he got his chance in the limited format of the game. In the new year, Yadav featured in 2 games in the ODI series against SriLanka. He picked 3 wickets in the first game and bagged 2 in the next.

The series against NewZealand was no different. He was economical in his bowling stint and picked wickets at crucial junctures to ensure India a 3-0 win in the ODI series and a 2-1 win in the T20 series. Such was his performance, that he was picked as the star leg spinner ahead of a fully fit Yuzvendra Chahal.

Ravi Ashwin & Ravindra Jadeja AUTO Selections in TEST Squad

There is no denying that Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are the most capable and versatile all-rounders that India has ever produced. Ashwin now limited only to Test cricket is one of the first names that is selected in the Playing XI. Apart from being a skillful bowler, Ashwin is excellent with the bat.

As for Ravindra Jadeja, the ace all-rounder who recently recovered from his knee injury featured in the Ranji Trophy for Saurashtra and managed to pick wickets to showcase that he is back to his full form. Most important, Jadeja being a left-handed batter will be promoted up the order to help in the right-hand-left-hand combo in the team.

The same applies to Axar Patel. Patel being a left-handed batter who can play big shots will be a big asset for the team. Moreover, given that Indian pitches are slow and offer a lot to the spinners, he is next to becoming undroppable in these turning pitches, where Patel can weave his magic.

Patel who missed India vs NewZealand series on account of his wedding will quite easily find his spot in the India Test Squad vs Australia ahead of Kuldeep Yadav.

India Playing XI

1. Rohit Sharma (C)
2. Shubman Gill
3. Cheteshwar Pujara
4. Virat Kohli
5. Ravindra Jadeja
6. KL Rahul (VC, WK?)
7. KS Bharat/Ishan Kishan (WK)
8. Axar Patel
9. Ravichandran Ashwin
10. Mohammad Shami
11. Mohammed Siraj

India Playing XI vs Australia – India will be facing the mighty Australians where they aim on going to the pitch with a dynamic team. Skipper Rohit Sharma will open the side along with youngster Shubman Gill. Gill’s terrific performances across all three formats off late has made him a sure-shot starter in the second opening spot.

The man for all-season in red-ball cricket, Cheteshwar Pujara will play on his usual, No. 3 spot while former skipper Virat Kohli will slot in at No. 4. There will be a lot of changes and combinations to perfect India’s middle order. A returning Ravindra Jadeja will be promoted up the order for the left-right combo.

It remains to be seen if BCCI allows KL Rahul to keep. If he is allowed, that opens up another spot, which can probably see Suryakumar Yadav getting his Test debut. On the other hand, should Rahul not be allowed to keep, Ishan Kisha and KS Bharat will fight for the keeper’s spot.

Axar Patel will come in at No. 8 while Ravi Ashwin comes next, but the spots could be interchanged given the two will once again pair up to bring the right-left combo. In the end, Mohammad Shami and Mohammed Siraj will be tasked to spearhead India’s pace bowling attack.
