Rohit Sharma’s poor numbers show, he shouldn’t continue in Test team, Bumrah has more wickets than his runs

IND vs AUS: Rohit Sharma's poor batting and captaincy seems to have led the Indian team down in the series.

Every player is bound to hit a rough patch, notwithstanding their greatness. But then it is up to the players, whether they want to go through the entire process of proving themselves again, or just hang up their boots. In the ongoing IND vs AUS series, Rohit Sharma must be going through a similar predicament.

Jaspirt Bumrah’s Wickets > Rohit Sharma’s Runs

For the record, in 3 Test matches, he has managed to score only 22 runs at an average of 5.50. It has been such a shoddy performance from the captain, that reports have started surfacing, that chief selector Ajit Agarkar is in Melbourne, to discuss his future in the Test team. To put his numbers further into perspective, even Pat Cummins has more runs than him. The Aussie skipper in 4 matches has scored 108 runs.

To further substantiate this point, as to how poor Rohit Sharma has been, forget Cummins, even Akash Deep has more runs — 31 in two matches, and so does Nathan Lyon — 24 in 4 matches. What is even more worrisome for the 37-year-old is, Jasprit Bumrah has scored 20 runs, and has more wickets than the total runs Rohit has scored in the series — 25 wickets and counting in 4 matches at an average of 13.

End of Rohit’s Test Career?

If one has to argue, that he has been poor in a couple of series’ only, then stats show otherwise. In the 25 innings he has played this year, he has only scored 610 runs at an average of 25. Yes, he had a poor 2015 and 2018 as well, but then Rohit had age on his side, and came back stronger after those setbacks.

The way he got out in the first innings of the MCG Test — Trying to attempt a pull shot and failing miserably, just goes on to show that he is short on confidence, and just not close to his best, what he was a few months back. His repeated change in the batting order is also not helping the team’s case. He has already batter at No. 6 and then went on to open in the Boxing Day Test.

While all the reports of him getting axed might not be true, Rohit Sharma himself should consider retirement. What has even impacted his batting is, his poor captaincy. He has been found wanting at every stage of the match. Just to talk about the MCG Test, his tactics against debutant Sam Konstas were questioned, when the latter was bludgeoning Bumrah. Apart from that, doubts were also raised on his decision to play two spinners — Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja.
