The incident happened in the first Australian innings when Labuschagne attempted to cut a Jadeja delivery, but instead played the ball onto the stumps. The left-arm spinner was called out for overstepping just as the Indians were celebrating after dealing Australia two early punches.

Labuschagne, who had not yet scored a run at that moment, eventually scored 31 (91) in a 96-run second-wicket partnership with opening batsman Usman Khawaja (60). These many runs, in the grand scheme of things, wouldn’t have mattered much in a Test match, but in a low-scoring encounter, it wasn’t the case.

India were bowled out for 109 in the first innings, and the opposition used the 88-run lead to take control of the game overall at the Holkar Stadium.

Gavaskar, who was a member of the commentary team for the series, was evaluating India’s performance after they were defeated by nine wickets in the span of seven innings. Gavaskar referred to Jadeja’s blunder on the opening day of the match by saying, “That no-ball cost us the match,” on Star Sports Network. Some fans didn’t take this well, and some of them criticized the former captain for his comments.

Gavaskar had voiced a similar annoyance while commentating the game at the time of the incident on Wednesday. “This is not acceptable. He has won a couple of Man of the Match awards but a spinner bowling a no-ball, I think Paras Mhambrey has to sit down with him and make him bowl from behind. This could cost India,” Gavaskar had said then.”

Coming to the match, Australia’s third day of chasing 76 got off to a terrible start when Usman Khawaja was dismissed for a duck. However, Travis Head and Labuschagne started out slowly before going all out against Ashwin and Jadeja. With six boundaries and one maximum, Head hit an unbeaten 49 off 53 balls. Labuschagne hit six fours and finished with a score of 28*. Australia gained the inaugural victory in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy after losing the opening two matches in Nagpur and Delhi, which were also completed in three days.
