Recently, former India opener Wasim Jaffer claimed that most of the players in India team don’t play spin very well. There was a time, spinners were terrified of Indian batters because of their supreme ability to play spin. Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, and VVS Laxman — all were excellent.

“Nowadays batters usually find their way out of trouble by hitting the bowlers out of the attack. It’s not what it used to be in our time where you were trained or told to play out the spell. Even in the seaming conditions, nowadays the batter will probably try to go out of the way and take the bowler out of the attack. The batter will be more aggressive or more proactive,” Jaffer further added.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have both struggled against left-arm spin or leg-spin. KL Rahul too has found it difficult. While Cheteshwar Pujara has been the best by far against spin, he too has been dismissed by spinners more often than not.

India’s spin problem

  • Rohit Sharma: 25 in 57 (Spin dismissal)
  • Cheteshwar Pujara: 50 in 122 innings
  • Virat Kohli: 57 in 130
  • KL Rahul: 19 in 38
  • Shubman Gill: 8 in 16

With most of India’s Top 6 players getting dismissed over 50% by spinners, Dravid has realised the problem. Australia have already identified how they can exploit that. Aussies have brought in 4 spinners while 3 more can roll up their sleeves and bowl spin. Hence, India won’t have it easy.

IND vs AUS Test Series: Why do India have 10 spinners in Test camp?

  • India have 4 spinners in their squad for Australia Test in Ashwin, Jadeja, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav.
  • The BCCI further added Washington Sundar, Saurabh Kumar, Rahul Chahar and Sai Kishore as net bowlers.
  • Jayant Yadav and Pulkit Narang are two additional off-spinners India will face in Nagpur nets.
  • The reason for having 3 off-spinners is a clear indication of tackling Nathan Lyon.
  • Lyon has of late tormented India with his skills. He has bagged 94 wickets in 22 matches against India.
  • With 4 left-arm spinners, 3 leg-spinners and 3 left-arm spinners, Dravid wants to cover all bases.
  • Different types of spinners will help Indian batters adjust to various release points and bowling styles.
  • Furthermore, India’s main spinners will get enough rest and remain fresh as the tour progresses.

WTC Final spot at stake: The four-match Test series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is also part of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23. Jasprit Bumrah missing the series is a big blow for India as India must win the series 2-0 or 3-1 to qualify for the WTC Final in June. The first Test of the series begins on February 9 in Nagpur. The last two Tests are scheduled to be held across the first two weeks of March.

India Test squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KS Bharat (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), R. Ashwin, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Suryakumar Yadav.
