“Pat won’t be coming back, he’s still taking care of what’s happened back home,” coach Andrew McDonald said on Tuesday. “Our thoughts are with Pat and his family as they go through that grieving process.”
As a result of leading the Test team in their final two games of the season, Smith will continue to serve as captain.
Since taking up the ODI captaincy after Aaron Finch’s retirement last year, Cummins has only managed the team in two games, both of which were played at home in November against a demoralised England team that had recently won the T20 World Cup.
Given that the forthcoming series will be played in the same nation hosting the ODI World Cup later this year, it assumes further significance.
David Warner and Ashton Agar return
David Warner, who has not been a part of the 50-over group practising in Ahmedabad recently, will make a comeback, according to McDonald. Warner missed the final two Tests due to an elbow fracture.
After being sent home midway through the Test series, Ashton Agar has returned and will reestablish his spin combo with Adam Zampa.
Glenn Maxwell (broken leg) and Mitchell Marsh (ankle surgery) both make their triumphant comebacks in this series.
Australia Team is also thinking hard about how many allrounders, including Marcus Stoinis and Cameron Green, they can fit into their one-day squad.
Australia squad: Steve Smith (c), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa.
