Kohli will be eager to keep up his strong form after snapping a Test century drought and making it a big score (186). Kohli was in excellent ODI form before to the Test series, scoring two hundreds in three games against Sri Lanka at the start of the New Year. He did, however, have a lacklustre series against New Zealand, recording scores of 8, 11, and 36. Yet, Kohli will be in a strong frame of mind for the ODI series with to the assurance that comes with having produced a Test century.
In addition, Virat Kohli needs three more hundreds to tie Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most ODI hundreds (49). Interestingly, Kohli snapped his lengthy ODI century drought in Bangladesh last December and has since scored three hundreds in the space of four months. In the meantime, Kohli aims to surpass Ricky Ponting on the list of batters with the most home runs in ODI cricket. Behind Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar, he is currently third on the list.
In an intriguing subplot, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will also compete for supremacy versus Australia. To tie Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most hundreds in India vs. Australia ODIs, both batters need one more century against Australia. Each has eight hundreds. Due to personal obligations, Rohit Sharma, who scored the game-winning century in the Nagpur Test, won’t be available for the opening ODI in Mumbai. Hardik Pandya will captain the team in place of him in the first game of the series.
