IND vs AUS: Shreyas Iyer – While Australia are plotting plans to stop Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to score huge runs in the upcoming four Tests, Ravichandran Ashwin believes it is Shreyas Iyer who is the backbone of the India Test team. Ashwin feels Iyer’s attacking batting lower down the order is the reason India are doing well for the past six months. While the Mumbai batter has been ruled out of the first Test in Nagpur in the first Test, Ashwin is confident he will be fit for the remainder of the three Test matches. “Shreyas Iyer has been India’s go-to Test batter alongside Rishabh Pant in the last couple of years. That in itself is a lesser compliment for him. He has been the backbone of this batting order. He is going to be a crucial player for India in Pant’s absence,” he said.

IND vs AUS: Why Ashwin feels Shreyas Iyer is the backbone of the team?
- Iyer has been in sensational form for India in Test matches ever since making his Test debut in 2021.
- In the seven Test matches, the KKR skipper has scored 624 runs at an impressive average of 56.72.
- Iyer was also instrumental in guiding India to victory in a tricky run chase against Bangladesh during the last Test series.
- The right-hand batter’s attacking batsmanship has helped India finish well in the past one year.
- Iyer has also a stupendous record at home amassing 388 runs at 55.42. But India have to do without the middle-order batter at least for the first Test.
IND vs AUS: Suryakumar Yadav poised to make Test debut in Shreyas Iyer’s absence
With Iyer ruled out of the first Test, SuryaKumar Yadav is poised to make his debut in Nagpur Test. Shreyas Iyer however is likely to be fit by the second Test onwards. The first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia will begin on February 9 at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium.
“His injury hasn’t healed as expected, and he will take two weeks at least to play cricket again. He will certainly not be available for the first Test, and his availability for the second Test will be subject to his fitness report,” a source in the Indian board informed Indian Express.
