IND vs AUS Delhi Test: How to deal with Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin trio on Indian pitches? Play a thousand sweeps. But as Australia’s plans went horribly wrong, crumbling to 52/9 in just one session, Aussie great Matthew Hayden did not leave the chance to mock Pat Cummins & Co. He brought a broom to the Delhi Pitch, showcasing how Steve Smith & Co died by a thousand sweeps. Other greats like Allan Border, Mark Waugh among others were not funny enough as they made scathing remarks about Australia’s approach. Australia are 0-2 down and are staring at a cleansweep. Despite heading to Day 3 at 61/1, Australia lasted just 92 minutes on Sunday. While the pitch did slow down further and the big cracks opened up with odd balls keeping really low, it was Ravindra Jadeja who took full advantage. As Australia tried to sweep away Jadeja and Ashwin, they fell to their own traps.

On Day 2, Usman Khawaja had already surrendered to Jadeja trying to play a sweep shot. He could only found the outstretched hand of Shreyas Iyer.

Day 3 was no different. As soon as Travis Head fell to a turning delivery of Ashwin, Australia turned to sweep.

Australia’s sweeping madness:

  • Steve Smith: Tried to sweep Ashwin but was trapped LBW. He took DRS but it only returned as umpire’s call and he had to depart. AUS 95/4
  • Matt Renshaw: Another sweeping attempt at Ashwin and Renshaw too was trapped LBW. He wasted a review as well as the ball did not turn at all. AUS 95/5
  • Pat Cummins: Australia captain tried to sweep as well. But Jadeja’s delivery kept too low and it shattered his stumps. AUS 95/7
  • Alex Carey: Despite promising his wife that he would not try reverse sweep, he did and it went horribly wrong. Jadeja’s delivery did not trun and Carey missed the length as the ball bounced a bit. It cleaned up Carey’s stumps. AUS 110/8
  • Matt Kuhnemann: In what was a funny dismissal, Kuhnemann tried to reverse-sweep off Jadeja. But it only deflected off his gloves and dragged the ball back to the stumps. AUS 113/10

In total, Australia lost 6 wickets to sweeps in the 2nd innings alone. Matthew Hayden who also swept his way to 549 runs in 6 innings. In 11 matches, Hayden has scored 1027 runs in India in Tests. But he still did not leave the chance to mock Australia’s sweeping technique.

“It’s a good option here but you need to know how. Can’t get too far beside the line. Need to come along the line of the ball,” Matthew Hayden said after the match.

What did other Aussie greats say?

Allan Border: I’m disappointed, I’m shell-shocked, I’m angry about the way we went about our work today. It was panicky, frenetic batting. No one tried to get in there and stem the flow with some good defensive cricket. They were just getting out playing sweep shots, reverse sweeps to just about every ball.

You just can’t get away with that on this sort of track. You’ve got to have a method where you play within your limitations. You’re not playing on a flat belter where you can expand your game. When playing on a difficult surface, you’ve got to work out where your scoring options are and bat some time at the crease.

I’m banning the reverse sweep. This sort of cricket on these pitches, it’s not a high-percentage shot. It’s the lowest percentage shot you can play, I just don’t get it.

Michael Hussey: That’s just a horrible shot from the captain. He’s thought ‘I’m just going to get a quick 30’ to change the momentum of the game and get our lead up as much as we could.

Mark Waugh: This loss is gonna hurt Australia. They had a chance to win this Test, and it’s gonna be a long road back in the series now. Lots of confidence dented.

Pat Cummins agreed to the fault in their methods. “Each batter has their own way to go about it. I don’t think there’s any one size fits all rule. Unfortunately, quite a few of us got out with kind of cross-batted shots which might not be our preferred method,” Cummins said.

Later, the player of the match Ravindra Jadeja did not leave the chance to take a dig at the Aussies either. Jadeja returned with career-best figures of 7/42 as Australia folded from 85/2 to 113 on Sunday. India chased down the target with 6 wickets to spare.

“Don’t think a sweep is a good option against me on this kind of wicket,” Ravindra Jadeja said.
