IND vs AUS: Mahela Jayawardena: Border Gavaskar – Legendary Sri Lanka cricketer Mahela Jayawardena has made a bold claim of Australia winning the upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy 2-1 in India. Jayawardena believes Pat Cummins-led side have what it takes to beat the mighty Indians in home conditions. Australia last won a Test series in this part of the world in 2004. Since then, India have dominated Men in Yellow in home conditions by using spin as their main weapon. Jayawardena though feels Australia hold a slight edge owing to their recent form in Tests. While speaking to Sanjana Ganesan on the latest edition of the ICC review, Jayawardena is expecting a fierce battle between India & Australia and is hoping the latter win the four-match Test series.

“It’s difficult to predict, but being a Sri Lankan, I’m hoping that Australia can go all the way. Probably a 2-1 win for Australia, but it’s going to be a tough one.”

IND vs AUS: Why Jayawardena believes Australia can topple India in the Border Gavaskar Trophy?

  • The Lankan legend opines that the Australian bowling attack is pretty strong and poses a threat to Indian batters.
  • Jayawardena feels it will come down to India batting versus Australia bowling. Although the visitors have lost Mitchell Starc and Hazlewood for the first Test, they still have a lot at their disposal.
  • With Scott Boland, Lance Morris, Ashton Agar, and Mitchell Sweepson, Australia have depth in pace and spin.
  • However, Jayawardena firmly believes that the start of the series is vital, and whoever wins the first Test will have momentum.

“I think it’s always going to be a great series. I think Indian conditions and how the Australian batsmen tackle that, they do have a really good bowling unit, and how do the Indian batsmen tackle that … it depends on how each team starts the series and who’s got that momentum. But it will be fascinating,” he said.
