India faced Australia in a series decider in the 2nd T20I at Nagpur. However, the match was cut short by the wet outfield. After a delayed start by about two and a half hours, a reduced 8 overs a side game took place. The umpires after inspecting the outfield and the pitch initially deemed the ground unplayable. But with time progressing, the match was reduced to its bare minimum capacity.

With steady rain, it is understood that water likely settles on the ground. But with the rain stopping, it takes quite an amount of time for the drainage to pass the water. However, Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is one such stadium that is equipped with the modern and famous Sub-Air system that can drain away rainwater at an exceptionally fast rate, thereby reducing delayed time owing to the wet outfield.

How does Sub-Air System Work?

There are two key aspects to this modern and mechanized system. The first being the Vaccum mode and the other being the Pressure mode. This powerful system acts as a powerful suction machine that can remove stagnated and standing water at a very fast rate. Stats indicate that the Sub-Air system can drain around 10000 liters of water from the ground in just a single minute. This accounts for 36times more powerful drainage power than the gravity of the earth.

The working process of this system acts on the basic fundamentals of physics. The vacuum mode generates powerful downward air pressure and movement into the soil. This makes the soil porous and helps the water to ooze out from the surface. As a result of this, the drainage water can be easily removed from the surface of the soil.

Once the water has been removed, the Pressure mode applied adequate pressure to push the air into the subsoil pipes and thereby reach the root zone. With the air being removed, the normal temperature of the soil is restored and finally, the air is dispersed from the gravel pits.

Bangalore’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is the first ever cricket stadium in the world to implement this modern water removal technique. One such prime example of the Sub-Air coming to use was back in 2017 in India vs Australia 2nd Test match. With heavy rain on the night of the 2nd keeping the outfield wet, the Sub-Air worked wonders to remove the water and ensure that Day 3 started at the proper time.
