- On Tuesday evening, the curator ordered the entire pitch to be watered first.
- The ground staff then heavily rolled the centre of the pitch.
- Then again, the area outside a left-hander’s leg stump got more watering.

Why did the ground staff made the last-minute adjustment? – The reason is simple. It is to create more rough patches for the spinners to exploit. The watered areas will be softer. As the match will progress, the surface will be loose and the pacers will create more rough around the areas.
As the outside of leg-stump for a left-hander will be a dangerous area for a right-hander, the ball will spin from the very spot. This is where a spinner like Ashwin will be dangerous for Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and others.

“These spots would be generally hard to spot by visiting teams. Because what happens is, the top layer is usually rough and the bottom layer will be hard. It is basically a trap, which many visiting teams fall for. The centre of the pitch will be watered, but the amount will be gradually brought down. Some of us use garden showers just to ensure the pitch gets only the right amount of water. Closer to the game, the grass will be culled. The top layer will expand when it absorbs water and it will get loose,” a curator explained to Indian Express.
