Halfway through the third session of the first day, Australia was all out thanks to five wickets taken by Ravindra Jadeja, who is participating in his first international encounter since August of last year. Jadeja finished with numbers of 5/37, while Ashwin contributed with 3/42.
In the process, Ashwin passed Anil Kumble as the second Indian spinner to surpass 450 Test wickets. On Day 1, Usman Khawaja and David Warner were both dismissed within the first four overs by pacers Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami, respectively.
Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne then helped Australia avoid losing any other wickets in the first session. By dismissing Labuschagne, Jadeja broke the stand on 82 from 202 balls.
The very next ball, he took another wicket and later also got rid of Smith. Then, a counterattacking knock from wicketkeeper Alex Carey gave Australia encouragement before eventually getting bowled out for 177.
While India got off to a great start Rohit Sharma, India captain, sped to his half-century in just 66 balls. With KL Rahul, who was much more cautious with his knock and eventually fell on 20 off 71 balls towards the close of the day’s play, he put up a 76-run opening partnership with Rohit.
