Fans are undoubtedly in for a spectacular warm-up game given the caliber of the talent being presented, with both teams determined to fight tooth and nail to win. Both Rohit Sharma and Aaron Finch will try to lead their sides to victory on Monday in an effort to set the tone for a grueling tournament.
Ahead of the India vs Australia T20 WC warm-up game, we take a look at some of the key battles that could decide the contest.
Mohammad Shami vs Australia top order (David Warner, Aaron Finch)
Getting early wickets will be essential to India’s chances of winning the match as Australia’s top order is one of the best in cricket. A player who has frequently served as Australia’s strongest suit is Aaron Finch. Over the past 18 months, his form has been hit or miss. But in the presence of returning David Warner, one would expect that the Aussie captain will have to do less heavy weightlifting.
For India, all eyes will be on returning Mohammad Shami and his fitness. The ace pacer will look to make his presence feel on the field with a bang. It is beyond a doubt that Shami on his day can trouble any top order in the world. But the big question surrounding the Uttar Pradesh-born speedster is his fitness and lack of game time. It is to be noted that Shami hasn’t played for India in the shortest format since November 2021.
Glenn Maxwell vs Yuzvendra Chahal
The unpredictable middle-order batter, Glenn Maxwell will be eager to flex his muscle against the Indians before the start of the WC. Based on his recent performances, it appears like Maxwell won’t just be a finisher for his team. But also someone who will be expected to take on the big responsibility of anchoring the innings if the need occurs.
Yuzvendra Chahal will be relied upon by India to outwit Maxwell by employing his variations and compel the star all-rounder to mistime his shots on the big Australian grounds.
Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav vs Adam Zampa
Adam Zampa is the Australian bowler that Virat Kohli will try to avoid at all costs. the legspinner has repeatedly got the better of the star India batter in recent times.
The pair have played together multiple times while representing the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League. And they undoubtedly know about each other’s shortcomings.
Another batter, that will be on Zampa’s radar will be world no. 2 T20 Suryakumar Yadav.
At No. 4, Suryakumar Yadav will serve as the backbone of the Indian batting order. Suryakumar has 532 runs in 17 innings during middle-overs play in all T20Is this year, with a mind-boggling strike rate of 180.95. During the same period, he has smashed 45 fours and 31 sixes.
Mitchell Starc vs India top order (Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul)
The Indian opening duo of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul has struggled with left-arm pacers on several occasions. Therefore, their matchup with left-arm fast Australian Mitchell Starc may determine the tone of the rest of the game.
Rohit (Average: 26.63 in 63 innings) has been dismissed to left-arm pacers 19 times in all T20Is. KL Rahul, in contrast, has only been dismissed five times in 32 innings while averaging 52. It will be interesting to see how he and Starc fare against the duo in PowerPlay.
