Idiosyncratic would be the word to describe judgements around DRS in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). In the first innings in Adelaide, KL Rahul walked back despite not edging the ball. Fortunately, it turned out to be a no-ball off Scott Boland. Then came the drama involving Ravichandran Ashwin and Mitchell Marsh. After a potential DRS blunder by the third umpire, Ashwin had the last laugh. However, that laugh came in an interesting manner as Marsh walked back without even edging the ball.
“Brain-fade” moment for Marsh against Ashwin
During the 64th over, Ashwin bowled a straighter one to Marsh. Prior to that, the veteran off-spinner was constantly troubled the all-rounder. He poked him at difficult lines, and Marsh was saved by the third umpire in the first session. But now he walked away. After a half-hearted appeal by Ashwin, umpire Richard Illingworth raised his finger. Incredibly, Marsh himself walked back, with Ashwin also seemingly a bit confused. Even Rishabh Pant knew that it was an iffy decision.
Indeed it was, with replays showing that Marsh didn’t touch the ball on its way through.
