IND vs AUS: India’s overdependence on Jasprit Bumrah exposed in Brisbane

India’s heavy reliance on Jasprit Bumrah continues in BGT 2024, as the star pacer dismisses Australian openers for the third consecutive Test.

In the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024, the Indian bowling attack has heavily relied on the ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah. As the series has progressed, it has become increasingly evident that the team’s bowling fortunes are closely tied to the performance of their talismanic bowler. An example from the IND vs AUS 3rd Test in Brisbane currently was again the early breakthrough from Jasprit Bumrah as he dismissed both the openers yet again in the first innings.

Bumrah’s dominance over the Australian openers

Bumrah’s impact has been particularly felt in his ability to dismiss the Australian openers, Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney. In all three Tests so far, the Indian speedster has been the one to provide the early breakthroughs, accounting for the wickets of both openers on multiple occasions in the first innings particularly.

Bumrah’s dominance in the BGT so far

In the opening Test at Perth, Bumrah showcased his class, registering a five-wicket haul in the first innings. He was the one who dismantled the Australian top order, accounting for the wickets of Khawaja and McSweeney.

The trend continued in the second Test at Adelaide, where Bumrah once again claimed the wickets of both Khawaja and McSweeney in the first innings. His ability to consistently trouble the Australian openers has been a major factor in India’s bowling performance.

The third Test at Brisbane saw Bumrah continue his dominance over the Australian openers. He once again sent both Khawaja and McSweeney back to the pavilion, further solidifying his status as the spearhead of the Indian bowling attack.

Bumrah needs support from Indian bowlers

While Bumrah’s heroics have been the driving force behind India’s bowling efforts, the team management will be concerned about the lack of consistent support from the other bowlers. Veteran Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has pointed out the need for Mohammed Siraj to step up and take more five-wicket hauls to ease the burden on Bumrah.

“Yes, to a great extent if India relies too much on Bumrah. You have got to say that. Mohammed Siraj is a good foil, but he has to start getting five wickets in an innings. Otherwise, the load is being picked up mainly by Jasprit Bumrah,” Gavaskar said recently, highlighting the team’s dependence on their star pacer. The development of other bowlers like Siraj will be crucial in reducing the team’s reliance on Bumrah and strengthening the overall bowling attack.
