The fifth India vs Australia T20I on Sunday, went down the wire but resulted in the hosts winning by six runs while defending a target of 161 runs. With this, Team India clinched the series 4-1, their first under the stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav. But the series and the match did not end without a bit of drama, with the umpire largely responsible for it.
The controversial incident occurred at the start of the final over of the match, where Arshdeep Singh had 10 runs to defend. The left-arm pacer started with a bouncer, that went over Aussie skipper Matthew Wade’s head. But the Indian umpire, Virender Sharma thought otherwise and did not give the wide, which left Wade fuming. He also had a mini argument but to no avail.
The drama did not end there. On the fifth ball of the over, Nathan Ellis managed to find the middle of the bat. The bowler did manage to get his hand to the ball, but could not complete the catch. Such was the speed on the ball that the umpire could not move out of the way in time and hit his abdomen. That only made matters worse for the touring Australian team, who were looking to salvage some lost pride in the final India vs Australia T20I.
