IND vs AUS: Indian pace attack without Jasprit Bumrah is quite useless, Sydney gives enough proof

IND vs AUS: Apart from Jasprit Bumrah, all the other Indian pacers looked rather ordinary, including Mohammed Siraj.

There is no doubt that Jasprit Bumrah is the best bowler in the world — his numbers and effect on the matches he plays in, is massive. In 45 matches, he has picked up 205 wickets at an average of 19. But there is hardly anything Bumrah can achieve alone, in terms of results, if he doesn’t get the support of the other bowlers.

Jasprit Bumrah Only Great Pacer In Team

The recently concluded IND vs AUS series, where the hosts won 3-1, Jasprit Bumrah picked up 32 wickets in the 5 matches, while the other Indian bowlers were a big flop show — and that resulted in a series loss for the team. In the Sydney Test, as soon as Bumrah picked up an injury, it was evident, that it was going to be struggle for India. And that is exactly what happened.

After setting a target of 162, Australia raced to 39/0 in first 3 overs, with no Bumrah there to bowl. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna were wayward to say the least, and bowled poorly, on the leg stump and gave away extras too. In short, that is the entire story of the series. When Bumrah picked up wickets, India thrived, and when the others bowled, they were ineffective.

Let’s start with the Perth Test. After India was bundled out for 150, it was his 5/30 that brought India back in the match. The Aussie innings was folded for 104, giving India a crucial lead. In the second innings again, he picked up 3 wickets, taking India to a famous win.

Ineffective Mohammed Siraj and Others

Come the Adelaide Test, again the 31-year-old pacer picked up 4/61 in the first innings. Siraj was hugely expensive with 4/98, while Harshit Rana returned with figures of 0/86. That meant, the Australian team had a healthy lead over India, paving way for a 10-wicket win. Meanwhile, the rain-curtailed Brisbane Test was no different.

In the first innings, Bumrah bagged 6/76 in the first innings. Siraj was poor with 2/97, Akash Deep 1/95 and Nitish Kumar Reddy 1/65. Although in the second innings, the hosts were reduced to 89/7, but Bumrah again was the stand out bowler. He picked up 3/18 in 6 overs. Then Siraj and Akash Deep leaked runs with economies of over 5, as compared to Bumrah’s economy of 3.

The Third Pacer Problem

At the MCG, it was a repeat story, where he got no support from other bowlers. He returned with 4/99, whereas Siraj got 0/122, Akash Deep 2/94. In the second innings, Jasprit Bumrah got a fifer, while Siraj got 3. Akash Deep got none. But AUS, after being reduced to 91/6, went on to score 234, pushing India out of the match.

In the series, even though Siraj had 20 wickets in 5 matches, but that shows the big bridge that the two bowlers have, in terms of quality. And one of the biggest differentiators was, poor options for third pacers — in Akash Deep and Harshit Rana.
