IND vs AUS Day 2: India struggles as Smith’s century and Kohli-Jaiswal collapse leave visitors reeling

India is trailing against Australia by 310 runs after Day 2 at the MCG. Steve Smith's century and a fragile Indian innings marked a tough day.

India is trailing behind by 310 runs after stumps at IND vs AUS 2nd Day. The day didn’t go well for India as expected at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday. It all started with Steve Smith’s masterclass, putting Australia to a solid score of 474 runs. Later, India’s innings shook initially with captain Rohit Sharma failing once again. Later, Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal provided some hope, which later got busted during the last few overs of the day. India now stands at 164/5 with Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant not out. Earlier in the day, Australian innings bundled up at 474 runs.

Virat-Jaiswal hopes go in vain after mishap

Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal attempted to rebuild the innings. Jaiswal’s patient approach was paying off as he reached a well-constructed fifty, with Kohli providing steady support. A crucial partnership began forming, but a miscommunication led to Jaiswal’s unfortunate run-out for 82, ending the promising stand and exposing India’s middle order. With Kohli’s dismissal, edged to the keeper off Boland for 36, India’s innings looked increasingly vulnerable at 155/4.

Rishabh Pant entered with a task to stead the ship alongside night watchman Akash Deep. Pant confidently got off the mark and tried to orchestrate a recovery. Unfortunately, Akash goes out early after getting caught at leg slip off Boland without scoring.

Rohit Sharma flop again, KL fails

Indian captain Rohit Sharma promoted himself to open the innings, but it didn’t work out for him as he failed miserably. He faced early woes, succumbing to a delivery from Pat Cummins. Sharma’s attempt at a short ball resulted in a poorly timed pull shot, creating a straightforward catch for the mid-wicket fielder. Sharma’s exit at 8/1 get a lot of criticism for Rohit from cricket pundits. As the innings progressed, the Australian bowlers maintained consistent pressure, resulting in India’s cautious approach. KL Rahul who came at number 3 became Cummins’ second victim, leaving India at 51/2.

Good start to the day for Aussies

Australia began their innings on the second day against India with Steve Smith and Pat Cummins at the crease. Resuming at 320/6, the duo played cautiously. Surprisingly, instead of Jasprit Bumrah, it was Mohammed Siraj who start with the bowling. Smith started the day playing with his typical determination, and Cummins contributed by finding gaps and rotating the strike efficiently. This partnership quickly set a solid foundation for the Aussies.

Smith’s masterclass

Steve Smith once again shone against India. He continued to demonstrate his class. As the morning progressed, he approached his hundred with a blend of patience and aggression. The Indian bowlers tried their best, but Smith remained unflappable. He reached his century with a well-timed four, marking his 34th Test ton and his 11th against India. It was his third hundred of the year, second against India in 2024.

Cummins and Starc contribute for last few overs

After Cummins’ dismissal for 49, Mitchell Starc joined Smith. Starc brought his trademark aggression, hitting a massive six over long-on and several boundaries, helping push Australia’s score past 400. His partnership with Smith added some important runs for the team. Later, Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon frustrated the Indian bowlers with a stubborn display. Boland successfully reviewed two LBW decisions, extending Australia’s innings. Lyon contributed with some timely boundaries, ensuring Australia’s total kept mounting. Australia’s innings concluded at 474 after Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Lyon.
