IND vs AUS: Bumrah shocks with playing XI, Washington Sundar gets the nod over Ashwin

India surprises fans by picking Washington Sundar as the lone spinner for the Perth Test, leaving out veteran R. Ashwin.

India takes a bold call for the first Test at the Optus Stadium, Perth, between India and Australia, opting for Washington Sundar as the sole spinner while veteran R. Ashwin is left out of the playing XI. Jasprit Bumrah, leading the side, chose to bat first after winning the toss, showing confidence in their preparation and the pitch’s expected quickening after the first session.

Along with Ashwin, India’s star all rounder Ravindra Jadeja is also exluded from the playing XI for the game.

A tactical gamble

India’s decision to back Sundar over Ashwin signals a strategic move to adapt to the Optus Stadium’s conditions, where pace and bounce dominate. However, spinners have found slightly improved success at this venue compared to the WACA. Sundar’s batting skills likely tipped the scales in his favour, providing depth to the lineup.

Debutant delight ft. Rana and Reddy

Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana received their maiden Test caps, marking a big moment for the two rising stars. Nitish, an all-rounder and giercy pacer Rana bring fresh energy to the side. For Australia, Nathan McSweeney makes his debut, stepping into a challenging role but with solid performances in the India A vs Australia A series.

Perth Pitch to offer pacers

The Optus Stadium’s drop-in pitch is expected to offer early assistance to pacers, with marginal help for spinners later in the game. While pacers have dominated here historically, Sundar’s inclusion hints at India’s faith in his ability to exploit the subtle spin-friendly elements.
