The Boxing Day Test between Australia and India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground made history on Monday, the final day of the match. It set a new record for the highest attendance at the MCG, surpassing the previous record of 350,534 from the 1936-’37 season. According to Fox Cricket, the total attendance for the five days of the match reached 350,700. Cricket Australia confirmed that this now stands as the largest crowd ever for any Test match played in Australia.
Melbourne Cricket Ground attendance
Saturday saw 83,073 fans in attendance, setting a record for Day 3 of a Boxing Day Test. This was also the largest crowd for a Day 3 of a match in Australia since 87,798 spectators watched Sir Donald Bradman bat in 1937. The all-time record attendance at the MCG stands at 350,534 from the 1936-37 Ashes series, which was played over six days. To surpass that total, Day 5 of the current Test requires 51,205 attendees.
The record attendance numbers come after the massive crowds India drew at the MCG during the 2022 T20 World Cup, with 90,293 spectators watching India face Pakistan and 82,507 witnessing India play Zimbabwe.
