IND vs AUS: BCCI should keep an “exit plan ready” for Virat Kohli, scored only 417 runs in 2024

IND vs AUS: Virat KOhli, apart from a decent 2023, has largely struggled in Tests since 2020, where in four years, he has scored only three tons.

It is sort of an open secret, that India skipper Rohit Sharma is on the verge of Test retirement, given his struggles, poor form & captaincy, and lack of ability to make the team win. But then he isn’t the only one who the fans are asking questions of. If not more, Virat Kohli is being put under the scanner as well. While Rohit has scored only 31 runs in the series, at an average of 6, Virat has scored 167 runs at an average of 27.

BCCI to Plan for Virat Kohli’s Retirement?

Ex-India cricketer Atul Wassan has asked the BCCI to keep a retirement plan ready for Virat Kohli as well. The latter has already taken retirement from T20Is, and might well be in the last stages of his Test career too. “Virat has got runs, but he also knows what’s happening. They are very sorted mentally. A player always thinks that ‘my best is around the corner’. I’ll do it just now.’ It’s such a long spell; it’s hurting the team, and there is questioning, saying you should be dropped. A lynch mob comes after you,” Wassan told news agency ANI.

“They also know what is going on. I think an exit plan, like a succession policy, must be clear, it’s not fair on the management, the team, and the cricketing structure, we don’t know what’s there in your mind,” he added.

Poor Virat in 2024

Especially with Virat, it isn’t the question of form, but his inability to counter his weakness outside the off stump. IN the IND vs AUS series, in the eight innings so far, he has been dismissed behind the wickets six times, exposing him severely. In the 10 Tests played in 2024, Virat could only manage to score 417 runs at an average of 24.
