IND vs AUS: Ashwin out of Brisbane Test? Ex- India cricketers back Washington Sundar

Ashwin's participation in the IND vs AUS Brisbane Test is uncertain as former Indian cricketers suggest Washington Sundar could replace him in the playing XI.

Former Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar highlighted the team’s heavy dependency on Jasprit Bumrah ahead of IND vs AUS third Test in Brisbane. The ex-Indian cricketer feels like Jasprit Bumrah is the last resort in every situation for the Indian Team. While Harbhajan Singh and Cheteshwar Pujara believes that Washington Sundar should play the third Test ahead of R Ashwin.

Gavaskar on Bumrah

Gavaskar believes that other players specifically bowlers should also lead and avoid depending on Bumrah alone. During a conversation in Star Sports he said, “Yes, to a great extent. You’ve got to say that. Mohammed Siraj is a good foil, but he has to start getting five wickets in an innings. Otherwise, the load is being picked up mainly by Jasprit Bumrah.”

Spinner selection debate

India’s former spinner Harbhajan Singh suggested Washington Sundar as a potential spinner for the third test. “If we have to play a spinner, I think Team India will look back at Washington Sundar. Because he played well in Perth and his bowling was also good.”

Piyush Chawla praised Ashwin’s performance in the second test. “The way Ashwin has played in the second test match, he kept them in check. He played very well. He conceded 50 runs in 18 overs and took one wicket. So, there is no need to change.”

Batting vs Bowling strength

Cheteshwar Pujara discussed the possibility of replacing Ashwin with Sundar. “There can be only one change. Washington can replace Ashwin if they want to strengthen their batting. There is no comparison in bowling. Ashwin is a very good bowler. But if they want a little more strength in batting, they can play Washington.”

Need for consistency

Deep Dasgupta stressed the importance of maintaining a consistent lineup. “Washington in the first test match and Ashwin in the second test match. Is there a need for so many changes? I don’t think there is a need. They have done it. They brought Ashwin in the second test match. But don’t do it again.”
