Who will lead India Cricket Team in the IND vs AFG T20 series? The BCCI Selection Committee is still clueless about who will be India captain in the India vs Afghanistan series. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has flown to Cape Town to discuss with Rohit Sharma if he will return for the T20 series. But since the IND vs ENG Test series takes precedence, Rohit could skip the series altogether. That brings Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja as three other captaincy options.
The selectors will meet today to pick India squad for Afghanistan series.
The reason is a string of injuries. Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav are out injured while another captaincy option Ruturaj Gaikwad too is sidelined with an injury.
Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and Shreyas Iyer have not led India. But Iyer and Jadeja have experience of leading in IPL. Shubman is yet to lead in the IPL but he does have captaincy experience at the domestic level. Hence, the selectors are in a bit of a dilemma.
Will Rohit Sharma return in IND vs AFG?
The biggest question at the moment is whether Rohit Sharma will return to lay T20Is. Rohit hasn’t played T20Is since India’s semifinal exit in T20 World Cup 2022. But both Rohit and Virat Kohli want to be part of T20 World Cup 2024. And their selection will be based on IPL 2024 performance.
However, with the IND vs ENG Test series coming up, will selectors take the risk of playing an injury-prone Rohit Sharma in IND vs AFG T20 series which is nothing but a formality?
At this stage, selectors want to give chances to youngsters in bilateral to have the backups ready. But if Rohit wants to play T20Is, selectors won’t stop him.
However, a lot will depend on what Rahul Dravid thinks. The head coach will have a big say in the squad selection for the IND vs AFG series.
