NZ beat IND: Did IPL 2021 cost India T20 World Cup? Was 100 Cr+ salary earning team tired?
GROUP POSITIONS at this stage – Favorites for Semi-Final Spot
- Pakistan: Pakistan wins 4th match on trot to Qualify for the Semi-Finals.
- New Zealand: Kiwis along with Afghanistan are favorite to finish the group at No. 2. Matches left vs Scotland, Namibia, Afghanistan. Match against Afghanistan will now be virtual Quarterfinals
- Afghanistan: They have 4 points beating Namibia & Scotland, victory against India tonight will put them in driver seat for the 2nd Spot. They can even afford to lose to India today as long as their net run rate does not take a big hit, given that they can defeat New Zealand.
- India: Yet to taste a victory. Only few mathematical equations can take them through.
IND vs AFG LIVE: What India need to do to make it to Last-4?
First thing First – India need to win all 3 remaining matches: India has matches against Afghanistan, Namibia and Scotland & they need to win all 3 handsomely to harbor any hope of making it to the Last 4.
Even win in these 3 games will not guarantee India a place in the last 4. India would hope that New Zealand lose to Afghanistan & than India somehow achieves better NRR than others.
The best-case scenario for INDIA: Win all three matches left, Afghanistan beating New Zealand and then all three teams tied on six points and net run rate being the decider. Having said that, India’s net run rate of -1.609 is way behind that of Afghanistan (3.097) and New Zealand (0.765) and would need major repair works for a net run rate boost. India play the final game of the group and would have the advantage of knowing the exact equation beforehand, should they stay alive up until then.
Net Run Rate (NRR) factor-
- Team India have a net run rate of -1.609.
- India will be not only looking for wins but also big margin victories against Afghanistan, Scotland and Namibia in their remaining group stage matches.
- Virat Kohli & Co will be hoping that Afghanistan beat New Zealand to keep them in the semifinals race (highly unlikely). If the qualifiers Namibia and Scotland pull off an upset against New Zealand, it could also benefit the Men in Blue.
- Kohli & Co teeter on the edge and cannot make it to the semifinals by relying on their own performance.
