Sanjay Manjrekar promised a belter and Team India delivered on that. Already knocked of Asia Cup, India had nothing to lose. India began with a plethora of changes including resting Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya. That saw Virat Kohli open with KL Rahul. Despite a new opening pair, India were off to a great start.

Although Rahul struggled initially, Virat Kohli looked in rhythm and was determined to score as many runs as he could. With 15 runs off Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the last over of powerplay, he signalled his intentions. With KL Rahul, he added 119-run stand for the opening wicket. Kohli brought up his 50 off just 33 balls while KL Rahul completed his soon.

While KL Rahul was dismissed in the 13th over for 41-ball 62, there was no stopping Virat Kohli on Thursday. With 12 fours and 6 sixes, Kohli shredded Afghanistan’s bowling attack. Mujeeb was the only bowler to concede less than 8 as Kohli hammered on. Thanks to Kohli, India hit 78 runs off the last five overs to take the score to 212/2.

But the man of the moment was Virat Kohli. It had been 1020 days since his last century. It was November 23 against Bangladesh in the Pink-ball Test at the Eden Gardens when he last took his helmet off to take the applaud. He had almost forgotten the taste of it. But the month-long break has done wonders to the man. In the end, he remained unbeaten on 122 off 61 balls. It was his 71st century to equal Ricky Ponting’s record.

“The last two and a half years have taught me a lot. I am going to turn 34 in a month. So those angry celebrations are a thing of the past. Actually, I was shocked. This is the last format I thought I could score one in. And I kissed my ring. You see me standing here because one person has put things in perspective for me. That’s Anushka. This hundred is for her and for our little daughter Vamika as well. When you have someone next to you having conversations putting things in perspective, like Anushka has been,” Virat Kohli said about his knock.

“When I came back I was not desperate. Six weeks off I was refreshed. I realised how tired I was. Competitiveness doesn’t allow it, but this break allowed me enjoy the game again,” he added.

For Afghanistan, who were coming from a heart-breaking last over loss to Pakistan, they had nothing to lose anymore. But Mohammad Nabi & Co looked drained and disinterested. They hardly had any time to recover mentally and physically and it showed. They dropped two catches on the field, had several misfields. They were all over the place with the ball and then finally with the bat.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was criticised for his poor show in the last two matches, hit back at his critics with career-best T20 figures of 5/4. In his first over, Hazratullah Zazai and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, reducing Afghanistan to 1/2.

In his 2nd over, Bhuvneshwar removed Karim Janat and Najibullah Zadran to bag his 4th wicket for just 3 runs. But KL Rahul made a smart move, continuing with Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The veteran pacer bowled 4 overs at a stretch, cleaning up the top order barring Ibrahim Zadran. Bhuvneshwar ended up with 5/4 with 20 dot balls from his 24 deliveries.

While Ibrahim Zadran waged a lone battle with an unbeaten 59-ball 64, Afghanistan fell like a pack of cards. However, Indian spinners failed to extract anything from the pitch. Axar Patel was economical with 0/24 in his four. Ravichandran Ashwin once again bowled a restrictive spell, bagging the wicket of Mujeeb Ur Rahman for 27 runs. Deepak Hooda got the wicket of Rashid Khan on his first ball. Even Dinesh Karthik got to bowl for fun as Afghanistan ended up with 111/8.

“I was just bowling in the right areas, and it was just my day. Surprisingly it did [swing]. The white ball doesn’t usually swing for 3-4 overs. Today wherever I was bowling I was getting the wickets. If you look at the other matches, there was not much swing and bounce. It’s been a good tournament, if you look at the matches it’s good for us to be playing strong teams like this heading into the World Cup,” Bhuvneshwar Kumar said after the match.
