“He’s [Venkatesh Iyer] really been working hard that I’ve been watching. In the last two nets session before batting, he was bowling a lot with Paras Sir and having a lot of discussion with Rohit [Sharma] too. So, you will surely see him in action. Today, there was no need to bowl him as Rohit used his all the bowlers really well,” SuryaKumar Yadav said why replying to a query at the virtual post-match press conference.

  • New captain Rohit Sharma had earlier raised eyebrows with his leadership in what was his first game as full-time skipper of the Indian team.
  • Rohit won the toss and chose to field, using only his preferred five bowlers during the innings, not opting to give Venkatesh Iyer a bowl during the game.
  • The move took many by surprise, especially with the KKR star earmarked as an alternative option for Hardik Pandya.
  • Iyer had bowled in the IPL 2021 for the Kolkata Knight Riders, picking up three wickets.
  • Despite his prowess, captain Rohit Sharma persisted with the likes of Mohammed Siraj and Deepak Chahar to bowl, despite the pacers going for runs in their initial overs.

IND beat NZ, 1st T20I- PC: SuryaKumar Yadav FIFTY- SuryaKumar was brilliant with the bat as he slammed a 40-ball 62 that comprised 6 boundaries and three massive sixes. He played a strike rate of 155 and expressed his joy after ending up on the winning side after the last-over thriller. He explained why the match went down the wire.

Talking about the death batting, I thought the wicket got a little bit slow and the ball became soft in the end. So, it was difficult to hit big strokes but they [Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel] kept their calm. I’m very happy to be on the winning side,” he told the reporters.

He also spoke about his role at No.3. “I have not been doing anything different, just being myself whatever I have doing since the last 3-4 years. I bat the same way in the nets and replicate the same in the middle. I try and put a lot of pressure on myself in the nets, for example if I get out I just try to come out of the nets and try and think what better I could have done and it really helps when I play in the middle,” SuryaKumar stated further.

Talking about the dew factor, Iyer said, “The ball was coming on nicely with the dew coming in and later on it became really slow but in the end happy to be on the winning side. I would have loved to finish the game but that’s how you learn and move forward.”
