Team India were hit with a major roadblock on Saturday after ace fast bowler Mohammad Shami was ruled out of the ODI series. Shami suffered an injury to his hand, ruling him out of the ODI series. Meanwhile, the veteran pacer is also a doubt for the Test series later this month.
The news rocked the India camp just a day before India’s series opener in Dhaka on Sunday. Umran Malik has since been rushed on, with the Kashmir quick to fly to Bangladesh at the earliest opportunity. Whether the 23-year-old reaches Dhaka in time to make the playing XI remains to be seen.
Umran did impress against NewZealand on debut and will be eager to showcase his strengths in sub-continent conditions. The Sunrisers Hyderabad star nonetheless faces stiff competition from Shardul Thakur and Kuldeep Sen for a spot in the side.
Shardul Thakur has featured regularly in ODIs for India but finds himself at crossroads. His economy of over 6 is far from satisfactory. Shardul did feature in the 1st ODI in NewZealand, but was swiftly replaced by Deepak Chahar. Chahar is sure to start on Sunday, despite the difficulty in retrieving his kit bag from the airlines.

There is also a case for Kuldeep Sen to make the lineup. The Madhya Pradesh pacer impressed in the domestic circuit and in the few IPL appearances with Rajasthan Royals. Known for his pace, Sen hits the deck hard like Thakur and could be of use in Bangladesh. Kuldeep is yet to make his debut, and this series could be the perfect chance to hand him an opportunity.
