Shami failed a yo-yo test before India’s 2018 tour of England. He was well aware that failing the test would jeopardise his chances of competing in future international matches. Shami was left out of the Indian squad for the England tour due to fitness concerns.

“Just before the 2018 tour of England, we had a fitness test and Shami failed it. He lost his place in the Indian team. He called me and said he wanted to have a word with me. So I invited him to my room; he was going through personal turmoil. His fitness was affected, mentally he was gone. He came to me and said ‘I am very angry and I want to quit cricket’,” said Arun.

Arun said that he immediately took Shami to meet Ravi Shastri and a conversation with him helped the Indian pacer make a roaring comeback in cricket.

“I immediately took Shami to meet Ravi Shastri. We both went up to his room and I said ‘Ravi, Shami wants to say something’. Ravi asked what it was and Shami told him the same thing, that ‘I don’t want to play cricket’. Both of us asked ‘What will you do if you do not play cricket?’ What else do you know? You know how to bowl when given the ball,” said Arun.

That year, the right-arm pacer made a stirring comeback, appearing in all five Tests against England and taking 16 wickets. Shami also played an important role in India’s historic series in Australia a few months later.

In the first Test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, India pounced on Australia from the word go. And it all started when Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj reduced the visitors to 2/2 early on the first day. Shami went on to take two more wickets in the second innings of a Test that India won by an inning and 132 runs.
