IND AUS 3rd Test: Fans and analysts are blasting the BCCI and ICC and debating whether curators went too far in preparing spin-friendly pitches against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. All bar one of the 14 wickets that fell on day one of the third Test in Delhi—a run-out—fell to spin. After a tumultuous first day, the visitors dominated, leading by 47 at stumps with a score of 4-156. India were rocked for 109 on a tangled spin web after skipper Rohit Sharma elected to bat after winning the toss. Follow IND vs AUS LIVE updates with InsideSport.IN

Veteran cricket writer Robert Crash Craddock said India’s pitch ploy backfired.

“Doctoring a Test wicket is a delicate business,” he wrote in the Courier Mail. “The Indore deck did not look like an accident. Much like the other two decks in the series it was green in the middle and dryer than desert sands at both ends – and cracking like a car window with a stone through it. If India lose the Test by overcooking the deck then they will deserve no sympathy. If they win it they deserve limited praise.”

Local media grilled India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour hard regarding the condition of the Indore pitch.

Rathour stated, “First day of a Test match, the pitch did a lot more than we expected. But, to be fair on the curators also, I think they hardly [had] time to prepare this wicket. It was pretty late that it was decided that the game was shifted from Dharamshala to this venue, so I don’t think they [had] enough time to really prepare the wicket. As a team, we want to play on turning tracks. This is what our strength is as a team. So, it is challenging. You need to bat really well to score runs.”

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra believes administrators need to address the issue of the quality of pitches and the short matches even though the proud cricketing nation enjoys their dominance at home.

“There is an inherent problem with a surface that is a rank turner from day one,” he told ESPN Cricinfo. “There is no way that [Indore] pitch is going to get better as the match progresses. Nobody should be asking for a surface which is so conducive to spin from bowl one, because then you’re doing a disservice to the game of cricket.”

Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden claimed that the pitch shouldn’t have favoured spin as much as it did.

“It shouldn’t be a spin bowler’s paradise necessarily. It shouldn’t be keeping low and turning a mile on day one,” Hayden said on commentary. “You’re allowed to have a four- or five-day Test match, otherwise just call it as it is. We’ll just play three-dayers.”
