IND AUS 3rd ODI: David Warner is at crossroads as far as his career is concerned. While his Test future looks bleak in the build up to the Ashes, he continues to be a behemoth in the ODI format. However, with the ODI World Cup on the horizon, his Delhi Capitals teammate Mitchell Marsh endangers his spot in the spot. With the IPL 2023 ahead, Warner has missed the first two games and is likely to sit out in the final game, raising further questions about his place on the side. IND vs AUS: David Warner conundrum
- David Warner was struggling for fitness after suffering a fracture during the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
- In his absence, Mitchell Marsh has smashed two quick-fire half-centuries in Mumbai and Vizag.
- Warner, who will captain Marsh in IPL 2023 at Delhi Capitals, is expected to miss the Chennai ODI.
- While his numbers support inclusion, Marsh’s recent form puts Warner’s place in doubt at the World Cup.
At 36, David Warner is running out of time to prove he still belongs at the highest level. He was found out in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, before being ruled out with a concussion and a hairline fracture on his elbow. While he has struggled in red-ball cricket, Warner continues to be amongst the best in the business in ODIs.
With 19 hundred and 27 fifties at an average of 45, Warner is amongst Australia’s all-time great openers in the 50-over format. In his last ODI, he scored 106 against world champions England at Melbourne. Warner is a hugely popular figure in India and has a boastful record in the country that will host the 2023 ODI World Cup.
In eight matches, He has scored 391 runs at an average of 55.85 with two centuries. He is the leading overseas run-getter in IPL history, with 53 half-centuries also a record. Warner led the Sunrisers Hyderabad to the IPL title in 2016 and will lead Delhi Capitals in the upcoming IPL 2023.
David Warner stats
David Warner | Matches | Runs | Bat Average | S/R | HS | 50s | 100s |
Overall | 141 | 6007 | 45.16 | 95.25 | 179 | 27 | 19 |
in India | 8 | 391 | 55.85 | 99.49 | 128* | 1 | 2 |
IPL career | 155 | 5668 | 41.99 | 140.58 | 126 | 53 | 4 |
Despite the numbers in his support, Mitchell Marsh’s rise as an opener puts his place in doubt. In his two outings this series, Marsh has scored 81 and 66 in blistering fashion. While he hasn’t bowled this series, Marsh does have some medium-pace bowling up his sleeve adding more balance to the Australian order. With Travis Head at the top, it also offers a left-right combination.
Such is Australia’s depth in resources that a World Cup in India without David Warner is a possibility for the 5-time champions. However, Warner will be itching to put all those suggestions and doubts to rest in the coming months in the IPL. Captaincy has never affected his batting in the IPL, and the 36-year-old is unlikely to let go of what could be a final chance to play in a World Cup.
