The T20 World Cup is heating up, and a surprising twist has emerged involving Australia and England. Here’s what you need to know:
England wobbly start
England, the reigning champions, suffered a blow after losing to Australia last week. Their qualification for the Super Eights now hinges on defeating Oman and Namibia while maintaining a superior net run rate compared to Scotland.
Australia potential gamble
Australia holds a peculiar card. They can exploit a loophole in the T20 World Cup format. By defeating Scotland with a narrow margin, they can ensure Scotland’s net run rate stays above England’s, effectively knocking their arch-rivals out.
There’s no advantage for Australia to crush Scotland as the net run rate resets for the Super Eights stage. As bowler Josh Hazlewood admitted, “It’s a strange one.”
“If you got through undefeated and have a good net run rate, it doesn’t count for much,” Hazlewood told in post-match press conference in Antigua.
Added Benefit: Eliminating England
However, Hazlewood acknowledges that eliminating England early on would significantly improve Australia’s chances of winning the World Cup. He highlights England’s strength as a T20 team, especially considering Australia’s past struggles against them.
Uncharted Territory for Australia
This situation is unprecedented for Australia. Hazlewood remains unsure if the team will strategize a specific margin of victory or simply play their usual game.
“In this tournament, you potentially come up against England at some stage again and they’re probably one of the top few teams on their day,” Hazlewood continued.
“We’ve had some real struggles against them in T20 cricket. So if we can get them out of the tournament, that’s in our best interest as well as probably everyone else.”
“It’ll be interesting to see. (We’ve) never really been in this position before as a team, I don’t think. Whether we have discussions or not, or we just try and play again the way we played tonight, that’ll be up to people, not me.”

England’s additional worry: Weather
Adding to England’s woes, rain threatens their remaining matches against Oman and Namibia. A washout in either game could spell elimination for the reigning champions. Pakistan, the 2022 finalists, also face a similar predicament after a shocking loss to the USA. Both teams desperately need wins and clear skies to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
Stakes are high
The upcoming matches promise high drama. Will Australia use the loophole to their advantage? Can England and Pakistan overcome their challenges and secure a spot in the Super Eights? Only time will tell.
