The IPL 2025 season is just around the corner, and fans are eagerly awaiting news on the retention rules and other details. One of the most intriguing questions is whether the Impact Player rule, introduced in the 2023 season, will continue. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has just dropped a significant hint that suggests it’s highly likely.
IPL 2025: Impact Player rule to stay
During a recent announcement, Shah revealed that each IPL team will be allocated a substantial sum of ₹12.6 crore for player fees. This amounts to ₹1.05 crore per player if they participate in all league matches. Interestingly, this figure aligns perfectly with the potential earnings of a player who plays every game under the Impact Player rule. To simplify, INR 12.60cr/12 = INR 1.05cr (the amount a player will get, given he plays all matches).
The Impact Player rule allows teams to substitute one player from their starting XI with a substitute at any point during the match. This substitute can then bat and bowl their full quota of overs. This dynamic rule came under huge scrutiny for not allowing all-rounders to get developed. IPL franchises used the Impact Player rule that ultimately forced specialists to take the field. From the likes of Rohit Sharma to Virat Kohli, all have voiced their opinion on this.
However, media rights holders and broadcasters have been adamant about the Impact Player rule to stay. This is because the unique rule adds uncertainty, and makes the match more tightly contested. High-scoring clashes are also some results of this rule. In fact, nine of the ten highest totals in IPL history have been recorded since the Impact Player rule.
