“If Virat Kohli retires”: Michael Clarke defends ace batter amidst poor form in Test Cricket

Virat Kohli managed to score just a single century in BGT 2024 in Perth Test

Michael Clarke has extended his support to ace Indian batter Virat Kohli. The former Australian captain has claimed that if Kohli retires from Test cricket at this moment, the only one to suffer would be the India Cricket Team. Michael Clarke lent his support to Kohli claiming he is that good of a player who can score a double century tomorrow and that calls on his future needs to be taken very carefully.

Michael Clarke was relentless in his support for Virat Kohli. He further added that he was the captain of the team then he would fight against the team management to retain the star player in his team. In the recently concluded Border Gavaskar Trophy, Kohli had a poor outing scoring just a solitary century in the Perth Test.

Fighting for him to stay in the Team

“It’s Virat Kohli! This guy can make a double hundred tomorrow. He’s that good a player. This guy could play, he should play until he’s had enough. If he retires from Test cricket right now, there’s only one team losing out, it’s India,” Clarke said in the Beyond23 Cricket podcast.

Despite Virat Kohli’s poor outing in the IND vs AUS Test series, Michael Clarke has his full confidence in the ace batter. He made it very clear that he would fight with the team management to keep the batter on his side had he been the captain.

“If I was captain of any team that Virat Kohli was in, even though I know he didn’t make as many runs as he would have liked, I’m fighting for him to stay in my team,” Clarke said.

Sachin was Different from Kohli

While parallels are constantly drawn between the great Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, Clarke remarked that both were very different players. He argued that Kohli’s biggest strength is his bat on the ball as he plays in a different way. Furthermore, Clarke argued that Kohli’s presence on the field and on the team is beneficial to the youngsters in the squad.

“Sachin was a different player to Virat Kohli. A lot of people during this Australian summer were saying Sachin did it in a Test match. He got out cover driving a couple of times and then let it go to make a 200 at the SCG. Sachin is a different player to Virat. Virat’s greatest strength is bat on ball. He just plays it in a different way,” Clarke explained.
