If Sachin Tendulkar is GOAT, Australia’s Steve Smith is as great – stats give real picture

After 205 innings, the Test stats for Steve Smith and India's Sachin Tendulkar are strikingly similar.

If one has to pick the most complete batter ever across formats — the first name that would come to mind is that of Sachin Tendulkar. The man played 24 years of international cricket for India — bringing many accolades to the country. But then, besides his enormous achievements in ODIs, it is his contribution in Tests, that really stand out.

Sachin Tendulkar vs Steve Smith

In 200 Tests, Sachin Tendulkar scored 15921 runs at an average of 53.78, along with 51 centuries and 68 fifties. When it comes to stats, there isn’t anyone who really comes close to his achievements.. at least for now. But there is certainly someone, who is matching his prowess till now in his career.

Steve Smith is a Test legend, who so far in his career has been an exceptional batter, and his stats are remarkably similar to that of Sachin — after 205 innings. The Aussie scored his 35th Test ton a day back. against Sri Lanka, and that meant — in 205 innings, he has scored 10,140 runs at an average of 56.33. To go with that, he also has 41 fifties to his name at a strike rate of 53.58 and a highest score of 239.

Who is Better?

When it comes to the Indian legend — at the 205-innings mark, he had scored 10,360 runs at an average of 56.30, with 35 tons and 41 fifties. Coincidentally, the strike-rate is also in the same zone, 53.97. That not only shows, how great a batter Sachin was, but also a testimony, that Steve Smith isn’t behind the Indian great – but on par with him.

Whether Smith goes on to replicate what Sachin achieved in 200 Tests, or surpasses that eventually, is a debate for later; but for now, there is nothing to separate the two cricketers.
