Sunil Gavaskar makes out-of-box suggestion on India’s T20 WC squad

Although Sunil Gavaskar feels in-form players in IPL should be given the priority for the T20 World Cup, he advocated in favour of seniors Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's inclusion in the T20 squad owing to their experience.

The T20 World Cup 2024 is a few months away. The India Cricket Team will play their last three international T20s before the T20 WC against Afghanistan. After the IND vs AFG T20I series, the Indian players will dive into the Indian Premier League (IPL) before travelling to the US for the World Cup. While the T20 series against Afghanistan is being seen as a way to determine India’s squad for the T20 World Cup, Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar feels the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup should be selected based on IPL form.

By selecting senior players such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the IND vs AFG T20I series, the BCCI and Indian selectors have made it clear that T20I series is being looked at as dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup. But Gavaskar feels IPL should be given priority because of it ends right before the WC.

“I feel the IPL form will be crucial because that will be the current form. The Afghanistan series is in January. The World Cup is in June. So whoever has good form in March, April and May should be given consideration first, that performance should be given consideration,” Gavaskar told Star Sports

'If Rohit, Kohli have ordinary IPL' Sunil Gavaskar makes out-of-box suggestion on India's T20 WC squad

“Along with that, I will also say that even if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have an ordinary IPL, but they score runs there, you cannot score runs in every match, but suppose they make good contributions in five out of 14 matches, you will have to take advantage of their experience, and you can probably pick them in the team,” Gavaskar added.
