Is Test Cricket slowly dying form the face of the planet? Former Australian captain and legend Steve Waugh shares this thought, Taking a cue of South Africa Cricket sending a novice squad to New Zealand for the Test series, Waugh has all the reasons to believe so.
Steve Waugh has been left bewildered by South Africa opting to send a novice squad to New Zealand. The Proteas are sending a 14-man squad to New Zealand for a 2 match series that consists of 7 uncapped players including their captain Neil Brand.
“If the ICC or someone doesn’t step in shortly then Test cricket doesn’t become Test cricket because you’re not testing yourself against the best players,” said Steve Waugh to the Sydney Morning Herald.
“I understand why players don’t come. They’re not getting paid properly. I don’t understand why ICC or the top countries who are making a lot of money don’t just have a regulation set fee for Test matches which is a premium, so people are incentivised to play Test Cricket,” Waugh further added.
South Africa has turned their attention of SA20 which begins on 10th January. With T20 World Cup on the horizon, the Proteas have turned their attention to the shortest format of the game.
This however has infuriated Waugh who claims New Zealand shouldn’t play the Test series. Furthermore, he has wanted the ICC to step in or Test cricket would die.
“If I was New Zealand I wouldn’t even play the series. I don’t know why they’re even playing. Why would you when it shows a lack of respect for New Zealand cricket? Otherwise they just play T10 or T20. The public are the ones who are going to suffers because it’s not the full side playing, so it’s not Test cricket,” Waugh concluded.
