“If his batting…”: Punjab Kings head coach on why MS Dhoni might retire after IPL 2025

Well, MS Dhoni and CSK are facing criticism from all sides, but Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting has something to say about the current CSK scenario and Dhoni’s retirement from the IPL.

If we say that Chennai Super Kings, the five-time champions, are currently under the pump, there’s nothing wrong with that. They are indeed facing heat due to their underwhelming performance in IPL 2025. Unsurprisingly, one of the main men, MS Dhoni, is also under scrutiny. Many feel it might be time for Dhoni to consider his future. While his wicketkeeping is still among the best, his batting is clearly not at its peak anymore.

The five-time champions CSK began their campaign with a four-wicket win against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians but went on to lose their next three games. As a result, they are currently placed ninth on the points table. The 43-year-old is facing criticism for his poor batting form.

Recently, former Australian World Cup-winning captain and current Punjab Kings coach Ricky Ponting opened up about Dhoni’s IPL future. He spoke about several aspects of MSD’s future in the league, backing him and praising his world-class wicketkeeping skills.

One big season or it’s time to think ahead!

Even MS Dhoni’s loyal fans have started questioning his batting position and, at times, getting frustrated with his poor intent with the bat in recent matches. As a result, many are now asking the inevitable question — when will MS Dhoni retire?

When Ricky Ponting was asked about Dhoni’s retirement, he came up with an impressive response. Speaking to The Indian Express, the Punjab Kings coach said, “It might just depend on how this season goes. If he can have a real impact with the bat, I think he will keep playing. If his batting output drops, he might start thinking about it. He’s been a terrific player for a long time”.

Ponting on CSK management

Not only MS Dhoni, but the entire CSK management is also under heat, as some of their recent decisions have come under scrutiny. Whether it’s team selection or their batting intent while chasing, several aspects have been questioned in recent times.

Speaking about the criticism directed at the CSK management, Australian legend Ricky Ponting said that CSK have a proven track record of success, so it’s hard to criticise their decisions. They’ve earned respect due to their consistent performance over the years.

Look, you are not going to argue with anything CSK do; they are one of the most successful teams in IPL history. They have had consistent coaching for a long time and generally make the right decisions. With the impact player rule now, Dhoni bats after other serious ball strikers in their own right” Ponting said.
