ICC in a soup, 2 officials resign after USA disaster in T20 World Cup

ICC top officials resign after apex body spends extravagantly in USA in recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup

The T20 World Cup has just ended and top ICC officials have resigned from their posts. The main reason? A chaotic World Cup overspending in this edition of the World Cup. ICC’s Head of Events Chris Tetley and General Manager of Marketing & Communication Claire Furlong have resigned from their respective posts. Furthermore, an audit of the expenditure and an investigation on the matter is likely to open up.

Reports claim that the over expenditure of the budgets have caused quite a stir. The Board of Directors are quite worried and it is expected that an audit would take place. The expenditure in USA have been paramount compared to those in West Indies. While further meetings on the matter will take place in Sri Lanka in the next ICC meeting.

ICC to conduct investigations

It is also believed that an investigation on the matter is likely to open up. “Mr Khimji wrote a letter to all the members and highlighted the conduct and expenses during the USA leg of the T20 World Cup. A lot of action around this was expected during the ICC meeting in Sri Lanka later this month but the resignations have already started coming in,” sources told CricNext.

Reports further claim that money was spent lavishly in USA. The ICC believed that the expenses would be recovered form the ticket prices, but it massively backfired.

“Money was being spent left, right and centre without any vision. They were spending thousands of dollars on activations at a single site and failed to attract encouraging responses. There was no planning whatsoever. Few individuals chose to spend money the way they wished to,” a senior USA Cricket official told CricNext.

ICC’s next annual conference is slated to take place next week in Sri Lanka. This major issues is set to be one of the key points for discussion.
