ICC T20I Rankings: India reclaim No 1 spot after 6 years – Rohit Sharma delivered what Virat Kohli could not. Under Rohit’s full-time captaincy, India reclaimed the No 1 T20 spot for the first time in six years with a dominating 17-run victory over West Indies in the third and final T20 against West Indies at the Eden Gardens on Sunday. After MS Dhoni, Rohit became only the second captain as India dethroned England.

The consecutive 3-0 series win meant, India surpassed England with 270 points. England had 269 points from 39 matches. When the fresh rankings are published by the ICC on Monday, India will reclaim No 1 spot.

The last time India were World No 1 T20, it was back in May 3, 2016 under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. India held the position between February 12 and May 3.

On Sunday, Suryakumar Yadav and Venkatesh Iyer put up an exhibition of shots, helping India set 185-run target. With the ball, despite brute hitting from Nicholas Pooran, Harshal Patel delivered with 3/22 to power India to a 17-run victory at the Eden Gardens in the 3rd and final T20. With that, Rohit Sharma and & Co managed double clean-sweep West Indies 3-0 in the T20 series on the back of 3-0 win in the ODI series.

For Rohit Sharma, it was the third consecutive series victory. After winning the T20 series against New Zealand 3-0, India steamrolled West Indies 3-0 in the ODI series and 3-0 in the T20 series. With that, Rohit Sharma also managed an enviable record of winning 14 out of 15 matches as the captain at home.

Furthermore, Rohit Sharma also created a new record, becoming the first Indian skipper to lead in four series whitewashes in T20s. Under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, India clean-swept Sri Lanka in 2017, West Indies in 2018, New Zealand in 2022 and West Indies in 2022.

Only former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed (5) and ex-Afghanistan skipper Asghar Afghan (4) have managed to do that.
