ICC T20 World Cup 2022: How can India qualify for semifinals?

India have climbed back to the top of Group 2 with win 5-run win over Bangladesh. India’s next opponents are Zimbabwe, and a win will officially confirm India’s semifinal spot. But India can qualify even before playing against Zimbabwe.

  • If India lose to Zimbabwe, Rohit Sharma & Co can still qualify if Pakistan beat Bangladesh and lose SA.
  • Bangladesh can get to a maximum of 6 points if they beat Pakistan.
  • But in order to surpass India, Bangladesh will have to win by over 100 runs against Pakistan.

Who’s in the driving seat to reach the semi-finals?

South Africa have the edge after the win over India. They are currently 2nd with 5 points from 3 games with an NRR of +2.772. They have to win one out of two games. Their next opponents are Pakistan and Netherlands. A win over Pakistan will seal the deal and knock Pakistan out.

  • SA will go top if they win against Pakistan with 7 points.
  • If SA lose to Pakistan but win against Netherlands, they will still qualify for the semis with 7 points.
  • However, they may lose the top spot if India win against Zimbabwe.

Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan & Co’s fate has been all but sealed. With loss to India, Bangladesh will now have to beat Pakistan and hope SouthAfrica lose to Pakistan and Netherlands.

How can Bangladesh qualify?

  • Beat Pakistan by over 100 runs to take the NRR to positive.
  • Hope that Pakistan beat SouthAfrica.
  • Bangladesh will also have to hope that Netherlands beat SouthAfrica.

Zimbabwe: With a loss to the Netherlands, Zimbabwe’s hopes are over. Despite stunning Pakistan, Zimbabwe suffered a narrow 3-run loss to Bangladesh.

  • Zimbabwe can achieve a maximum of 5 points.
  • Zimbabwe have to beat India by over 150 runs to surpass SouthAfrica’s NRR.
  • But if SouthAfrica beat Pakistan, Zimbabwe will be knocked out.

Netherlands have already been knocked out despite their win over Zimbabwe. Even if they win against SouthAfrica, they will get a maximum of 4 points. South Africa and India already have 5 and 6 points respectively.

Can Pakistan still make it?

Two defeats, both coming on the final ball of matches against India and Zimbabwe, have left Pakistan needing something special to make it to the semifinals. It is now unlikely that Pakistan will reach the final four, but not mathematically impossible. Their win over Netherlands helped them open the account.

They needed India to win against SouthAfrica to make it easier for them. However, Pakistan’s fate now hangs in balance. If South Africa win one more game, Pakistan will officially exit the tournament.

The virtual quarterfinal will be against SouthAfrica on Thursday, 3 November. But even if Pakistan win, their place will not be guaranteed. They would hope SouthAfrica lose to Netherlands which is unlikely. Babar Azam & Co will also have to beat Bangladesh just to stay in the fray.

It is out of Pakistan’s hands, however. If India or South Africa win 1 match, then they will finish with more than six points – the maximum that Pakistan can reach. Net RR could yet be a factor, so a big margin of victory in at least one of the remaining games wouldn’t hurt either.
