ICC mulling Rs 125 crore fund to revive Test cricket

The ICC’s proposed fund reflects a concerted effort to revive and sustain Test cricket amid the growing dominance of T20 leagues. By addressing financial disparities and offering incentives, cricket’s governing bodies aim to ensure that the historic format continues to thrive on the global stage.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is contemplating the introduction of a substantial fund of at least Rs 125 crore (USD 15 million) to support Test cricket, addressing the challenges faced by the traditional format of the game. This initiative, originally proposed by Cricket Australia (CA), aims to boost players’ match fees and counter the growing allure of lucrative T20 franchise leagues that are drawing talent away from Test cricket.

Support from key Cricket Boards

The proposal has garnered significant backing from major cricket boards, including the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) as per the Sydney Morning Herald.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, who is a strong contender to become the next ICC Chairman, has shown support for the initiative, which reflects a collective effort to preserve the integrity and popularity of Test cricket.

Key objectives of fund for Test Cricket

The proposed fund is designed to ensure a minimum match payment for Test players, potentially set at USD 10,000 per game. Additionally, it would cover the expenses of sending teams on overseas tours, providing crucial financial support to national boards like the West Indies, which struggle to compete with the wages offered in global T20 competitions.

“We need to take away the barriers and encourage Test cricket to be the best of the best,” said CA Chairman Mike Baird, who introduced the concept in January. “To retain that history and that legacy, which goes alongside the newer forms of white-ball cricket.”

Impact on Wealthier Cricket Nations

While the fund is expected to be a lifeline for financially weaker cricket boards, it is unlikely to benefit the three wealthiest cricket nations—India, Australia, and England—since they already offer substantial salaries to their Test players. However, the initiative underscores the importance of ensuring a global standard for Test match remuneration, which could help sustain interest and participation in the format worldwide.

Challenges from Broadcasting Disputes

The availability of funds for Test cricket from the ICC may be influenced by ongoing disputes with broadcaster Star. The Star network is reportedly seeking to renegotiate a 2022 broadcast deal with the ICC, aiming to reduce its value by half from the original cost of over USD three billion. The outcome of these negotiations could have a significant impact on the financial resources available for Test cricket.

India’s Incentive scheme for Test Players

In a related move, the BCCI has introduced an incentive scheme for India’s men’s Test cricketers to encourage prioritization of Test cricket and reward consistent performances in the longest format. Under this scheme, players who participate in at least 75 per cent of India’s Test matches in an annual cycle will earn an additional Rs 45 lakh per match, on top of the standard Rs 15 lakh Test match fees. Players featuring in 50-75 per cent of games will earn a bonus of Rs 30 lakh per match, while non-playing squad members will receive half the amount.

The ICC’s proposed fund reflects a concerted effort to revive and sustain Test cricket amid the growing dominance of T20 leagues. By addressing financial disparities and offering incentives, cricket’s governing bodies aim to ensure that the historic format continues to thrive on the global stage.
