The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made the decision to shift the second Test match of the upcoming Pakistan-Bangladesh series from Karachi to Rawalpindi. The match, originally scheduled to begin on August 30, will now follow the first Test, which is also set to be played in Rawalpindi from August 21.
Why Karachi to Rawalpindi?
This unexpected change has been necessitated by the ongoing renovation work at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi, which is undergoing a major overhaul in preparation for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. PCB has recently rented new floodlights in their stadiums in Lahore and Karachi.
The PCB had initially planned to hold the Karachi Test without spectators to minimize disruptions, but it became apparent that even this measure would not be sufficient to meet the tight redevelopment timeline. The use of heavy construction equipment and the need to maintain a swift pace of work for the stadium, which is set to be a key venue for the Champions Trophy, have made it impractical to continue with the Karachi Test.
After careful consideration and in consultation with the Bangladesh Cricket Board, the PCB deemed it necessary to relocate the match to Rawalpindi.
“We have been guided by the construction experts on the timelines for the readiness of the venue. They advised that while construction could continue during playing hours, the resulting noise pollution would disturb the cricketers. Additionally, the dust from the construction work could also affect the health and wellbeing of the players, officials, broadcasters, and media.
“Given that construction must continue uninterrupted to ensure the venue is operationally ready for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the PCB, after consulting all stakeholders and reviewing operational and logistical matters, has decided to hold both Tests in Rawalpindi.,” PCB said in a press release.
