Former opener Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as Team India head coach, BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed on Tuesday. Gambhir takes over from Rahul Dravid and faces the challenge of maintaining the team’s momentum after their recent T20 World Cup victory.
Gambhir’s first assignment as head coach will be the upcoming limited-overs series against Sri Lanka, starting at the end of July. Excited about his new role, Gambhir shared his thoughts on social media.
“India is my identity and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life. I’m honoured to be back, albeit wearing a different hat. But my goal is the same as it has always been, to make every Indian proud. The men in blue shoulder the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians and I will do everything in my power to make these dreams come true!” Gambhir wrote on X.
While Gambhir doesn’t have previous coaching experience, he has been a mentor for several IPL teams, including Kolkata Knight Riders, who won the IPL 2024 earlier this year.
