In the world of cricket, MS Dhoni remains a legendary figure nowadays, particularly in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Although he has been part of the league for 17 seasons, the 43-year-old is still committed to preparing for IPL 2025. Despite retiring from international cricket nearly six years ago, Dhoni is determined to stay fit for the world’s biggest cricket franchise league. As Chennai Super Kings retained him ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, they continue to trust in the wicketkeeper batter, who has led them to multiple victories.
Dhoni on IPL retirement
Dhoni acknowledges the physical challenges involved in staying fit for the IPL. Although he only plays a couple of months each year, he emphasises the need for extensive preparation. “I only play a couple of months in a year, but I want to enjoy it the way I started playing, that’s something that keeps me going,” Dhoni shared at an event for Garuda Aerospace.
Dhoni added,“But, of course, for that, I need to put in a lot of hard work for six to eight months because IPL is one of the toughest tournaments. Nobody really cares about how old you are. If you’re playing at this level, the level needs to be the same.”
MS Dhoni on his motivation
Reflecting on his cricket journey, Dhoni recalls his initial motivation. “When I started playing international cricket, for me the biggest motivation was representing my country,” he said. Hailing from a state lesser known for cricket, he was driven to make significant contributions to the national team.
“For me, my biggest motivation was that contribution to make India win. Now that I’ve retired from international cricket, I can’t say it’s the same, but for me now, it’s the love for the sport,” Dhoni remarked.

MS Dhoni on his life beyond cricket
Now, more than ever, Dhoni plays for the love of the game. “It’s hard work, but for me now, enjoying the game is the key aspect,” he noted. Dhoni is also focusing on personal growth off the field, aiming to be remembered as a good human being. “When I’m out of the field, trying to be the best kind of a person that I can be so that people remember me for being the good human being… so that’s something that I always had in my life that this is what I am in person,” he concluded.
