Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has taken an indefinite break from IPL 2024 after a tragic dip in form. On Monday, the Australian star revealed that he asked the team management to drop him from the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, saying he wanted to take a physical and mental break. However, the change of gears did not result in a change of fortunes for RCB, with Faf du Plessis’ team suffering another defeat in IPL 2024.
“Last night I went to Faf and the coaching staff and said ‘I think it’s time you play someone else in my place.’ I felt I needed a physical and mental break,” Maxwell said at the post-match press conference.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru were outplayed in a high scoring tie that saw both teams score 250+ runs in the game. Sunrisers Hyderabad smashed their own record to score 287 runs in the first innings. RCB gave SRH a run for their money but fell short by 25 runs in the end.
Maxwell’s own call
The supporters were in for a surprise after not finding Glenn Maxwell in the team sheet. However, the Aussie batter revealed that he urged the coaches and the captains to give someone else a chance.
“Sometimes it’s a case of not being able to get away with certain things. The run-in I had prior to the IPL 2024 has been the best 6 months of my career. I thought I was in a pretty good shape to turn up and contribute for the team but unfortunately it has not been the case,” Maxwell said.

Close-knit as a group
This was RCB’s sixth loss in seven games. On being asked how the squad is coping up with the constant failures, Maxwell said, “Surprisingly we have been very tight-knit as a group despite the defeats. Last now before our practice session, we had a really nice chat where everybody opened up on where we were and where we needed to be. We are honest, open about our chances and the things we are lacking.”
