Wasim Akram was reportedly the first-choice for the role of advisor to PCB chairman, with Waqar Younis coming into the picture only later

Former Pakistan star Wasim Akram was reportedly offered the role of a advisor to PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi before Waqar Younis. In it’s continued efforts to revamp the national side, the PCB named Younis as an advisor, which he will be taking care of both the white-ball and red-ball teams. As per Cricket Pakistan, Younis was contacted after Akram declined the offer.

As per the report, Wasim Akram turned down the offer as he was a permanent resident of Karachi and would be forced to shift base to Lahore if he accepted the role. His frequent visits to Australia is also one of the reasons he provided. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi reportedly presented his roadmap for the future of Pakistan cricket.

Following this, Akram stated that he was willing to help Pakistan cricket in any manner without compensation, adding that he was mighty impressed with the ambitions.

The report states that Akram’s decision forced the PCB to turn to Waqar Younis. After being named advisor, he is expected to shift to Pakistan from Australia, where he currently resides.

The shakeup in PCB continues after Pakistan’s poor performance in the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup. Previously, both Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq were removed from their posts as selectors after numerous controversies arose regarding the team selection.
