Vignesh Puthur probably had the moment of his life when he was patted on his back and exchanged a few words with the legendary MS Dhoni. The MI spinner had an impressive IPL debut in the game against CSK, finishing with a spell of 3/32. Now, a friend close to the Kerala spinner has revealed what MSD told the youngster during their brief chat.
What Dhoni told young Puthur
Speaking to The Indian Express, Puthur’s Sreerag revealed that Dhoni had asked the MI spinner what his age was. The former CSK captain asked Puthur to continue doing the same things that paved his way to the IPL.
“Dhoni asked him how old is he and told Vignesh to keep doing the same things that have brought him to the IPL,” Vignesh’s friend Sreerag said.
Vignesh Puthur picked 3 wickets – Gaikwad, Dube and Hooda before he was pulled out of the attack. MI’s stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav held him back till the 18th over when he conceded 15 runs including two sixes to the well-set Rachin, allowing CSK to seal the game.
Who is Vignesh Puthur?
Vignesh Puthur is a promising all-rounder from Malappuram, Kerala, who has risen through the ranks of domestic cricket despite financial challenges. Born on March 2, 2001, he is the son of an autorickshaw driver and a homemaker. Initially starting as a medium pacer during his college cricket days, Vignesh transitioned to spin bowling, specializing in slow left-arm orthodox.
Mumbai Indians scouted Vignesh during his domestic appearances and bought him for ₹30 lakh in the IPL 2025 auction. Earlier this year, he trained as a net bowler for MI Cape Town in SA20 alongside Rashid Khan, refining his skills further.
