The Indian Premier League (IPL) is set for potential changes in 2025, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) considering increasing the number of matches from 74 to 84. This proposal has sparked discussions among various stakeholders.
Since the introduction of Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants, the IPL has included 74 matches per season. Before that, the league featured 60 games. The shift to 84 matches could offer more opportunities but might also impact player fatigue and scheduling.
Jay Shah on IPL expansion
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah recently addressed the topic, hinting that the IPL might expand to 84 games. Speaking with the Times of India, Shah said that the final decision will depend on several factors.
“Nothing is confirmed. We will collectively decide. We also have to factor in the workload of the players and the window also. It’s in the contract but it is up to the BCCI to decide,” he said.
Shah has expressed confidence in the potential for new bidders for IPL media rights, which could bring fresh perspectives and competition. He also highlighted the BCCI’s ongoing efforts to enhance cricket infrastructure, including new facilities and stadiums.
