How India squad should be selected? Head coach Gautam Gambhir’s old video goes viral

In an old video going viral, head coach Gautam Gambhir said India squad across formats should be selected based on domestic tournaments and not just IPL.

Team India under the guidance of new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, will take on Sri Lanka in a white-ball series. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the squad for both T20 and ODIs. Much to the surprise for many fans, head coach Gautam Gambhir took some bold decisions in selecting the squad.

To note, Suryakumar Yadav was named as India’s T20I skipper, while Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the ship in ODIs. Shubman Gill replaced star all-rounder Hardik Pandya as the T20I vice-captain as he also missed out from the ODI setup.

Meanwhile, in a video going viral on social media, head coach Gautam Gambhir spoke about how the India squad across all three formats should be selected.

Gautam Gambhir on India squad selection

Speaking to Ravichandran Ashwin in a podcast, Gambhir said, “The T20 side should be selected based on IPL performances. The 50-over format should be selected from Vijay Hazare Trophy and your Test side should be selected from First-class cricket.

It should be as simple as that. Otherwise, If you start selecting people for the 50-over format and the Test side based on IPL performance, then I think you are making a lot of shortcuts for the youngsters. It’s like walking on the edge,” Gambhir added.

Speaking about India tour of Sri Lanka, the players will leave for Sri Lanka on July 22, and the tour starts with a three-match T20I series on July 27. This will be followed by a three-match ODI series.
